Birthrights by David Williamson

coming in September

David Williamson has long been one of Australia’s most popular playwrights with classics like Don’s Party, The Removalists, and The Club. Birthrights was published in 2003 and explores the emotional topic of surrogacy through the lives of two sister, Helen who is unable to fulfil her greatest dream; to be a mother and Claudia her younger sister who is prepared to offer her the gift of surrogacy. The drama really heats up once the child is born, can Claudia give the child up, will she ever have her child, and will their relationship survive?

Lismore Theatre Company is in the unique position of having real life sisters playing the lead roles. Elyse Knowles and Kylie Faud bring their own amazing bond of sisters to this production, creating a special chemistry together on stage. They are both being superbly supported by LTC veteran Jennie Hicks and new comers Andrew (Duckie) Silcock, Kim Andrews and Sal-Anne Sinclair.

Directed by Sharon Brodie this is an engaging play with strong characters, thought provoking and witty dialogue that makes for a thoroughly enjoyable theatre experience.

Community Group Fundraising

The Lismore Theatre Company is happy to offer community groups the chance to purchase discounted tickets for a night during the opening week of one of our shows to use as a fundraiser through promotion to  members and friends. As an example, the whole theatre of 88 seats can be purchased for around $11 per seat and then offered for, say, $20 or more per ticket realising a minimum profit of $800,  and potentially much more. If you are interested please contact Jennie Hicks on 0431 958 991/ 66879167 or by email on hicksanddickson@gmail.com.

The Rochdale Theatre

And a quick update on LTC’s progress with Lismore City Council in relation to the disposal of the Rochdale Theatre. It has become clear over the past few months, that Council doesn’t want to continue to be the landlord responsible for the theatre building, and should LTC continue to be a tenant, the rent would rise considerably. In light of this, LTC put forward a proposal to purchase the theatre at a minimal price. A number of Councillors have expressed support for this proposal. Council staff have yet to provide their report to a Council meeting but they have promised to inform LTC when this occurs so that we may speak to the issue.

Meanwhile, we have  had a wonderful letter of support from Arts Northern Rivers and also an offer of support from Trevor Acfield and the Greens representatives in Lismore.
